Handira Wedding Blanket
Known as Moroccan wedding blanket, this stunning handira is woven out of cotton by Berber women in the Middle Atlas mountains. Berber wedding blankets are woven in anticipation of a wedding, by the bride's female relatives. It can take many hours — even weeks — of work to attach those hundreds of mirrored sequins once the weaving is complete! During this collaborative task, the bride's relatives teach her all about marital duties and expectations. After the wedding ceremony, the bride wears the blanket tied around her neck as a kind of cape.
Each handira blanket is a very unique piece and is woven in consideration of the bride to be, to protect her, comfort her, bring her luck and fertility! Today handira is popping up everywhere — and the blankets aren't only finding their way onto beds or sofas. They’re being used as rugs, wall hangings and headboards.. The sequins add a hint of glamour and texture to wide variety of design aesthetics!
