How to Choose the Perfect Rug

You pulled together furniture, wall art, throw pillows and plants but your living room still doesn’t feel complete? It needs a rug! Versatile and stylish, they provide a solid foundation for your space, creating a sense of cohesion and coordination. Deciding which area rug is right for you involves several key factors. Let’s discuss it!

Styles

There are thousands of different rug styles out there, same as different interior design styles. A great starting point would be to define your personal interior design style and learn more about it. Scandinavian, industrial, shabby chic, minimalist, mid-century modern or bohemian? List goes on. Educating yourself about your prefered style will help you understand what kind of atmosphere you want to create in your room. Remember that an area rug doesn't need to match everything in a room, but it should work with the textures and tones of the existing furnishings.

Shag

Shag rugs feature a high-pile construction that is soft, plush, and luxurious to the touch. More than just an icon of the '70s, shags come in a huge range of materials, colors, and designs that can add texture and upscaled sophistication to any space.

Contemporary

The landscape of contemporary design shifts often, but true contemporary style takes on a softer appearance than the stark lines of modern design. In addition to sporting popular patterns like trellis, chevron, abstract, and graphic prints, contemporary rugs often reinvent traditional motifs by changing the scale of the pattern or updating the color palette.

Vintage

Vintage and vintage-style rugs are trending in a big way. From traditionally styled homes to hip bohemian lofts, vintage rugs are making a statement.

Traditional

The main features of traditional style rugs include intricate Persian motifs such as vines, flowers, and scrollwork. Traditional rugs typically have inner borders filled with intricate patterns, making them great for defining and centering spaces like dining and living rooms.

Mid-Century

Just like the interior design style, Mid-Century Modern rugs are bold, bright, and eye-catching. Rather than blending in as a neutral decorative element, Mid-Century Modern rugs are designed to stand out. Look for low-pile rugs that boast saturated hues and abstract or geometric patterns to rock this retro style.

Bohemian

Bohemian rugs are both whimsical and stylish and usually feature vibrant color palettes, bold designs, distressed patterns, flatwoven techniques, and natural fiber constructions. The key to achieving a Bohemian look with area rugs is to layer antiqued traditional carpets with flatwoven, natural-fiber rugs. Opt for rugs with fringy details or distressed designs to truly capture the boho vibe.

Moroccan

Moroccan rugs are distinct and recognizable yet complement a range of decor styles. Look for carpets that feature the familiar crisscross or zigzag pattern of traditional Beni Ourain rugs, or tie in a bolder Moroccan pattern like geometrical trellis or latticework.

One or More

Yes, as if trying to find one wasn't enough, now in many cases, people are using two (or more!). It is quite common to use multiple rugs in larger rooms to define different areas. Open-concept spaces, like lofts, are more likely to benefit from multiple rugs, they can be used to separate a living area from a dining or media area, in the absence of walls. Smaller spaces, and living rooms enclosed by walls and doorways, usually benefit from a single large rug.

Size

A common way to size a rug is to ensure that it reaches underneath all four feet of all the furniture. Or you could use a smaller rug that runs under the front feet of the sofas and chairs, and stops there. Just make sure that smaller objects at the rug’s edges, like end tables and floor lamps, are completely on or off the rug.

Patterned vs. Plain

If your space looks too minimal, a patterned rug can really bring your room to life. For louder and bolder patterns, it is recommended to only use these alongside plain furniture as to avoid clashing. Patterned rugs are best used when matching their accent colours to other décor so there is the look of an intentional theme. They also look best in small plain rooms to give the illusion of more space. Likewise, if you have patterned furniture, a solid rug can have a grounding, calming effect. It's all about balance!

 Rug Color

Rugs can either stand out or blend in, so think about what effect you want to create when considering color. If your room has a lot of color and pattern, shoot for a rug in neutral tones or a single color. And if there is minimal furniture to coordinate with in your living room, you can go all out with a multicolor geometric pattern, zigzag design, abstract motif or another exciting look!

 Material

Rugs come in many materials, including plant-based fibers like cotton, linen, sisal, jute, natural fibers like wool, silk and mohair; and synthetic materials like nylon and solution-dyed acrylic. Each offers a different look and feel, with varying characteristics related to how well the materials wear and how easy they are to clean. If you have children or pets, a white rug with a high pile is probably not the best choice. If you expect that your rug will have to deal with a lot of wear and tear, a flat weave rug with a pattern that masks stains is worth considering, as it will be easier to maintain and keep clean. On the other hand, if you want to create a sense of comfort and luxury, a flat weave rug probably won't do the trick.
